How we chose our topic:
Both of our families are very sport oriented. Our families play soccer, basketball, football, dance, and of course (because of our topic choice) baseball. And as we looked through the list of topics, we found very few that seemed of interest to us. We tried a few topics, and as we started the research, we noticed that those weren’t very interesting to us either. Miranda decided on a topic, which was, the rights and responsibilities of african americans in baseball (which was not on the topic sheet), but wanted something that she hadn’t heard about a lot from her family. I chose the Curt Flood case, which was on the topic sheet, but I still did not like it, so I was looking for a new topic. Miranda found a new more interesting topic which was the Great Awaking in Connecticut, and started to find that boring also. Miranda had the idea that we could both do the Rights and Responsibilities of African Americans in Baseball, and work together by doing a live performance. After researching, we realized that our project was mostly focused on the Negro League, so we changed our topic to the Negro League.
How we conducted our research:
For a large part of our research we used the Mid-Continent Public Library Databases to find websites that have credible, reliable and useful information. Within Mid-Continent, we mainly used Facts on File African American History Online. We also visited the Woodneath Mid-Continent Public Library Center To attend the “Playing to Win- Films Focused on the Negro Leagues” and watched the movie, “42”.
How we selected our presentation category and created our project:
We both wanted to do the Negro League, and our teacher said that we could only work together if we did a live performance, and we both love acting, and are in the spring musical, so we thought that it would be a great idea if we did a performance. We created our project by first collecting the research, putting it into script form, then creating the set and costumes. Finally, we put all of those aspects together to create our presentation.
How our project relates to the NHD theme:
Our topic relates to the theme because it shows how the Negro League players were not treated the same as regular white baseball league players. They sometimes even had to rely on white baseball leagues equipment and their baseball fields. They were treated as if they did not have the same rights as white baseball players, as they were normally not allowed to use white player's dressing rooms, even though they did not have their own, their pay was low, and their traveling accommodations were poor.
